On March 29 I paid an extra $500 to upgrade my economy seat to first class on a flight from Philadelphia to San Francisco. Here’s what I got for that $500.

Before the plane takes off

I get to board first. No crowding around the entryway with the other “gate lice.”

Once on the plane, I get a big comfy seat.

And I get to sit next to a window! Although I love the view from an airplane, I usually don’t sit in the window seat because I get up often and I don’t like to inconvenience the people in the middle and aisle seats. But a first-class window seat has so much legroom that it’s easy to get in and out of without disturbing the person next to you.

I am given the drink of my choice — a glass of water — the minute I sit down. It is served in an actual glass. Made of glass. My fellow first-class flyers are being served everything from coffee to cocktails.

I sit in my lovely seat watching the mob filing on board, looking at me enviously.

After Takeoff

The view from my window seat is great! This close to the front of the plane, the view isn’t blocked by the wing.
