"completely wasted time with zero rewards" is a great description of why I feel so pissed off when I find myself in the middle of a Medium short story.

I stopped writing short stories myself decades ago.

When I first got on Medium, I "re-published" a half dozen of my favorites and I'm glad that I did that but they didn't get many reads.
