EYEBALLS

Heterochromia affects only 1% of people in the world.

I’m one of them.

My eyes look like this. But without the makeup and mascara.

If I ever rob a bank and end up on a Wanted Poster, I know what they’ll put under “distinguishing characteristics.”

My right eye.

My left eye is your basic run-of-the-mill blue eye, but my right eye is blue with a solid streak of brown.

Unusual Eyes

Having two different colors in one eye is called heterochromia It’s so unusual that in 70 years of life I’ve only run into one other person who also has a multi-colored eyeball.

I was born with it, so it’s always been a part of who I am. I rarely think about it.

Until somebody reminds me.

Sometimes people notice it upon meeting me, but usually it takes a while. For some folks, it takes years.

A friend or co-worker will suddenly lean forward, peer into my eyes and exclaim, “you’ve got a brown stripe in one eye!”

Just to mess with them a little, I’ll respond with, “You’re kidding me! I had no idea!”

As if I’ve somehow managed to look at myself in the mirror for decades without noticing it.
