I've been playing the piano on and off since I was 6, and I wish that music theory appealed to me. I'd be a much better piano player if it did.

Although I read music, I mostly learn things, even complicated things like a Chopin Nocturne, by ear, and I can't count worth shit, and I don't understand the structure of what I'm playing.

You are lucky that music theory appeals to you, and wise to pursue it.
