I did have a cat.

I don't think you're allowed to be a librarian if you haven't got at least one cat or a dog.

She lived a long life and when she died I didn't replace her.

These days I spend a week out of every month in California (spending time with my grandchildren)which wouldn't be fair to a companion animal.

So instead of a dog or cat, I guess I've got grandchildren.
