I don't understand the entire situation here either.

I'm an editor, and because I'd worked with my own son on various writing projects when he was growing up, by the time he hit high school he didn't need -- or want my help.

He made it into a terrific college on his own merits and is now a very successful writer himself.

Maybe my friend didn't have the time and patience to help her son with his writing when he was young -- or he refused to accept help?

I don't know.
