I grew up in Detroit in the 1960s. In my elementary school, the Black kids were the cool ones and we white kids emulated them. I have no idea how that particular schoolyard culture came about but I'm glad it did.

Life being what it is, every girl should learn how to defend herself.

But hitting shouldn't be the first response.
