Flying to California to see my grandkids again! Photo by Author.

Noise-cancelling headphones. (Plus a good set of earplugs.)

To block out the noise of the engines, the even worse noise of that irritating pitch the flight attendants always give you about the airline’s latest credit card offer, or just a blabbermouth seatmate.

Battery charger

On some flights you can plug your device into that little thingy on the seatback in front of you to recharge. But not every plane has them. And I’ve been on several flights where there was a little recharging thingy — but it didn’t work. Which it why it makes sense to bring your own charger.

Eye Shades

For night flight sleeping and day flight napping.

Bottled water and a tasty snack.

Staying hydrated while flying is a good idea. Rather than waiting till the flights attendants bring the cart out and offer me a drink, I always carry my own empty bottle to the airport and fill it with cold water after I’ve gone through security.

Snacking on the plane is a great way to pass time. And everybody knows that the food you eat aloft contains no calories! But the grub they sell on the flight is ordinary and overpriced…
