I once had to explain how a manual typewriter worked to one of our library pages.

She typed to the end of a line and then sat there waiting for the machine to somehow get itself back to the beginning of the next line so she could continue typing.

She thought it was hilarious that you actually had to do this job yourself at the end of each line by pulling a little lever.
