I used to babysit for a family who had taught their one year old daughter, who was preverbal, some sign language so she could make herself understood.

One day while I was taking care of her she kept making one sign at me over and over. I didn't recognize the sign, and finally her 5-year-old sister, who did, told me

"She wants to nurse."

She was definitely barking up the wrong tree.
