I used to write for the New York Times, and I was shocked by how nasty and mean some of the comments were.

I'd post a personal essay about something that mattered to me and although most of the comments were intelligent and kind, a bunch of assholes would always swoop in out of nowhere to try to make me miserable.

They insulted my intelligence and my looks and all of my life choices.

And my editor told me that those were the comments the paper let through -- there more more comments so vicious that the paper screened them out.
