i'd say this discussion should take place BEFORE marriage.

I know a married couple who have 7 cats and are blissfully happy.

They went into the relationship knowing that a house packed with cats is what both of them wanted.

Not sure if either had married another person and then said, "Oh by the way, I want to have 7 cats," it would have worked out this well.
