I’m Thinking of Ditching My Medium Publication

Does that make sense? Who knows?

A year ago, I started up a Medium publication, It’s a Hardback Life, to publish my own work. Basically, it was a catch-all for my Medium posts that didn’t run in other publications.

The little Homepage blurb that describes It’s A Hardback Life says:

If you want to read Roz Warren’s writing, you’ve come to the right place. If you don’t want to read Roz Warren’s writing, you’ve come to the wrong place.

That pretty much sums it up.

Why did I start a publication?

Because Shaunta Grimes said it was a good idea. So did countless other Medium Masters. The consensus seemed to be that once you hit a certain number of followers, you started a publication.

So when I hit 3K followers, like a sheep, I started a publication.

The other reason I started a publication? It enabled me to communicate directly with my readers. I could send newsletters to the folks who followed it, alerting them to new work. Which they could ignore!

Which most of them did.

Now that Medium has refocused its energy and attention (at least for now) on individual writers rather than on…
