In our family the expression, coined by my father, was "Too late to cross Grand River."

It took us years to learn that nobody said this but us, and that it wasn't an expression in general use.

The explanation for why "Too late to cross Grand River" meant "that ship has sailed" would take an essay itself.

Maybe one day I'll write it.
