Is it Fair to Ban Everyone on a Plane from Eating Nuts Because One Passenger has a Nut Allergy?

Or is this just nuts?

A friend describing a recent cross country flight told me that once everyone was buckled into their seats, the flight attendant made an unusual announcement. There was a person on board with a severe nut allergy, she told the passengers. As a result, the flight attendants would not be handing out nuts during beverage service.

Not only that but everyone on the plane was told to refrain from eating any food containing nuts for the duration of the flight.

So, for instance, if you were on that flight and had packed peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to sustain yourself and your kids for the next six hours?

No PB&J for you!

Is it nutty to ban nuts in flight?

My friend, who is a very kind and compassionate person, had no trouble with this prohibition. Of course, it didn’t interfere with her plans. She’d brought herself snacks to eat, but they were all nut-free.

Prohibiting the eating of nuts would have inconvenienced me. I have a rare inner ear disorder and cannot eat salt. Since most processed food contains salt, I always travel with a small container of unsalted nuts when I know…
