It is definitely considered bad form to remove a story from one Medium pub so that you can publish it in another one.

That being said, if the pub that originally published your story is now defunct -- no longer publishing new material -- and you disclose to the editor of the new pub that it was published in that now defunct pub, then that new editor can choose to publish it or not.

If the original pub is not defunct, you could always query the editor of that pub about removing the story and make a case for why they should let you do so in this case. If never hurts to ask.
