My grocery store doesn’t hire cashiers with disabilities that I’m aware of. (or course there are many disabilities that aren’t obvious to the eye). If I were to encounter one, I’d probably ask “Can I help you with this?” before I pitched in. Because, as you say, they may or may not want or need my help.

Guess I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.
