Racism is real. The question is what we privileged white women can do about that. It's impossible to know whether getting involved in the situation you saw would have done any good. Or, indeed, if something racist was indeed going down. But witnessing something like that should motivate us to do SOMETHING useful, if only to make a contribution to a local organization that is fighting racism.
