Terrific piece.

This deserves a much wider readership.

My mom chose to die at home rather than in a hospital back in 1979.

At the time this was pretty much unheard of and she met with plenty of resistance from the hospital.

We rented a hospital bed and set it up in the living room and took care of her round the clock.

We also rented oxygen.

It was exhausting and unconventional but so much better for all of the reasons you list here.

From the point of view of me, her daughter, the biggest plus was all of the hours I get to spend with Mom doing things like playing Mah Jong and eating shrimp cocktail and talking for hours and watching TV and just enjoying her company.

Thanks for inspiring me to remember that time.
