The library system where I used to work spent a small fortune on self checkout machines so that they didn't have to hire enough staff.

But a large part of why people visit the library -- and why people enjoy working there -- is the human interaction.

I would have spent the money on hiring enough people rather than on machines.

And I think that the public would have appreciated that choice.
