The more I eavesdropped (I shouldn’t have but they were loud) the more annoyed I became with Carole.

Why not eavesdrop? Especially if they were making it so easy. My family always listened in on surrounding conversations in public places. I have a great memory of my dad shushing me once in a restaurant as I began to speak because he wanted to finish listening to something a person at the next table was saying.
