She wouldn't even come downstairs in the morning until she'd put on her red lipstick.

I've never worn make-up and I never will. I used to write for the New York Times website and I once wrote an essay about my refusal to wear make-up -- which was the only thing I ever wrote for the blog that was reprinted in the "Sunday Styles" section.

And I got hundreds of comments about that shocking and unusual choice.
