One of the good things about learning that the man I'd loved and trusted for 20 years had had a secret girlfriend for over a decade was that we weren't married so I could throw him out and change the locks and never see him again.

Had we been married, I would not only have had to see him in divorce court but because I was a hard-working, solvent librarian and he was broke, I would probably have ended up paying him alimony!

And then I would have had to kill him.
